Question
Optics.Interference.MS.KC4: In a Young's double slit experiment the slit separation is increased. Which of the following happens to the interference pattern shown on the screen? (a) The minima get closer together while the maxima get further apart. b) The minima get closer together while the maxima stay in the same location. (c) The minima and the maxima both get closer together (d) The maxima get closer together while the minima stay in the same location (e) The maxima get diffused and less bright.Explanation / Answer
For minima (m=n+1/2 for n is an positive ineger) Apply
d*sin(x)= m*l ; l-wave length , d- slit seperation , x- angle created with principle axis
but for small angle sin(x)= y/L ; So, y= (m*l/d)*L
Now for the 2 cases,
y1= (m*l/d1)*L -----(A) ; y2= (m*l/d2)*L ----------(B)
(A)/(B) ; y1/y2 = d2/d1 since d2>d1 , y1>y2
The minima has get close together
