Question
14) One of the most important applications of Faraday's law of induction is to motors and generators. A motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy while a generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. load A motor has an armature with a resistance of 5 S2. The magnetic field is supplied by field coils which form an electromagnet of resistance 55 ? connected in parallel with the armature. The motor and field coils are both connected to a 110 Volt de line. At full speed the back emf is 100 Volts. a) What is the current through the motor when it first starts up? b) What is the current when the motor is running at full speed?Explanation / Answer
given
resistance of the armature is R = 5 ohm
dc voltage is V = 110 V
back emf is Vb = 110 V
a) the current through the motor when it first starts up is I = V/R = 110/5 = 22 A
b) when back ef of Vb 110 V is there then the current is
I = (V -Vb)/R
I = (110-100)/5 = 10/5 = 2 A
the current when the motor is running at full speed is 2 A
