Question
b) There were 3 phenomena that puzzled classical physicists but can be explained by quantum physics. Explain the following behavior from a quantum physics perspective (10 pts each) Brighter light causes an increase in current but does not give individual electrons more kinetic energy a. The maximum kinetic energy of the of the electrons is dependent on the frequency of the light b. For a given metal, there is a threshold frequency below which no electrons are emitted regardless of the intensity of the light. c.Explanation / Answer
a) From the quantum physics perspective, number of electrons ejected per second increases as the intensity of light increases because it delivers more photons per unit time to the metal surface. The energy will however be the same.
b) Higher frequency light possess photons with higher energies. As this frequency increases, the photons will have extra (excess) energy which can become ejected electron's kinetic energy. Hence, Maximum kinetic increases with frequency.
c) The cutoff frequency fo is where the photon energy hfo = Wo . Light below a certain cutoff frequency, no matter how intense, will not cause any electrons to be emitted and Light above the cutoff frequency, even if it's not very intense, will always cause electrons to be emitted
