Explanation / Answer

for the first converging lens :

f = 15.2 cm

do = object distance = 30 cm

di = image distance = ?

Using the lens equation

1/di + 1/do = 1/f

1/di + 1/30 = 1/15.2

di = 30.8 cm

d = distance between the lens = 40.9 cm

m1 = magnification of first lens = - di/do = - 30.8/30 = - 1.03

For the second lens :

do = object distance = d - 30.8 = 40.9 - 30.8 = 10.1 cm

di = image distance = ?

f = 15.2 cm

Using the lens equation

1/di + 1/do = 1/f

1/di + 1/10.1 = 1/15.2

di = - 30.1 cm

m2 = magnification of second lens = - di/do = - 30.1/10.1 = - 2.98

the final image is located 30.1 cm in front of the second lens

m = total magnification = m1 m2 = (- 1.03) (- 2.98) = 3.1
