Print Your Name and TUID: Section: Instructions: Solve the problem below using the RIDEA framework. A complete solution worth 27 pt Problem 3 A 400-W computer (including the monitor) is turned on for 8.0 hours per day. If electricity costs 10e per kWh, how much does it cost (in S) to run the computer annually for a typical 365-day year? 1) Represent the problem in terms of symbols and diagrams 2) Interpret the problem by identifying applicable concepts and principles 3) Develop a plan for solving the problem 4) Evaluate your answer 5) Assess your answer

Explanation / Answer

Given Power = 400 W

Per day used = 8.0 hr

Days in 1-year = 365 day

total time = 365*8 = 2920 hr

Price of 1 kWh = 10 Cents

Now we know that

Power = Energy/time

Energy = P*t

Energy = 400*2920 = 1168000 W-hr

1 kWh = 1000 W-hr

1168000 W-hr = 1168 kWh

Now given that

Price of 1 kWh = 10 cents

So price of 1168 kWh = 1168*10 cents = 11680 cents

100 cents = 1 dollars

Total price = 11680/100 = 116.8 dollars
