Question

Summary PH 120o 3. Explain why a straw in a glass of water appears bent. 4. To three significant digits, give the speed of light in air: a) How long does it take for light to travel through the air from here to Detroit, MI, a distance of approximately 923 km? b) How long would it take for light to travel through a solid glass fiber optic cable with an index of refraction of 1.67 from here to Detroit? 5. Consider a glass fiber with an index of refraction of 1.67. Calculate the critical angle for total internal reflection given that the index of refraction of air is 1.00. Show your work.

Explanation / Answer

3. As light travels through a given medium, it travels in a straight line. However, when light passes from one medium to the other medium, the light path bends. Refraction takes place at the boundary. As we look at the portion of the straw that is submerged in the water, light travels from water to air (or from water to glass to air). This light ray changes medium and subsequently undergoes refraction. As a result, the image of the straw appears to be bent.
