A person with type A blood may donate blood to the following: a) A b) AB d) A and B e) A and C 60. A person with type A blood may receive blood from the following a) A b) AB d) A and B e) A and C 61. A person who is type O positive may donate blood to the following: a) A Positive Blood b) B Positive Blood c) A Negative Blood d) A andB e) All of the Above 62. A person who is type O negative may donate blood to the following: a) A Positive Blood b) B Positive Blood c) A Negative Blood d) A and B e) All of the Above

Explanation / Answer

57.d) O negative blood group is considered as the universal donor because of the absence of antigen A, antigen B and Rh antigen from the surface of their RBCs. It is the presence of antigen which is responsible for any incompatibility issue a person may encounter while receiving blood from another blood type when certain antibodies present in the blood plasma react against the specific antigen. O negative type can donate blood to A+ve,B+ve,AB+ve,O+ve,A-ve,B-ve,AB-ve and O-ve.

58.c) AB blood type is the universal recipient and the reason for this is that AB blood group have no anti-A or anti B antibodies in their blood plasma thereby preventing transfusion complication that may arise during blood transfer from another type and make them an easier recipient. For being a successful recipient of any particular blood type a person must have the same ABO antigens as on the RBCs of the donor or receive blood from O type lacking antigens.

59.a and b) A person with type A blood may donate blood to type A or type AB as people with A blood group have antigen A on their RBC surface and anti B antibodies in their blood plasma. Blood type B has already anti-A antibodies in their plasma so this doesn't allow effective blood transfusion when they receive blood from type A blood group. In addition, O blood group has anti-A and anti-B in their blood plasma thus clearly they cannot receive blood from type A.

60. a and c) A person with type A blood may receive blood from type A or type O.

61.d) Here in regard to the question asked type O positive can donate blood to both A positive type and B positive type and not to A negative type because in general Rh-positive blood is donated to Rh positive patients as Rh -ve person receiving blood from Rh+ve is more likely to cause transfusion complications.

62.e) all of the above
