Question
4. What microscopic properties of the air make the speed of sound dependent on its temperature? Explain.
5. Had your box included a tube of twice the diameter than the one you used, how would have this affected your results?
2) In the case of open-closed tubes, the sound wave reflects off the closed end, and therefore a node is expected at the end of the tube. The figure below shows two of the possible resulting resonances. In our experiment we focused on the first one. Based on your data, what length of tube would be required to obtain the second resonance? open-closed tube 2 L- 3) In the case of open-open tubes, there is an antinode at each end of the tube. The figure below shows one of the possible resulting resonances. Had you used this type of tube in your experiment, what length of tube would have been required for the measurement? open-open tubeExplanation / Answer
Question: 2)
Using the formula,
v = f*lambda
where,
v is the velocity of sound 330 m/s
f is the frequency of the given tuning fork, say 249Hz
lambda, the wavelength = 330/249 = 1.33 m
Hence, a length of L = [(3/4)*lambda] = 0.75*1.33 = 0.99 m = 1 meter open-end tube is required for the second resonance to occur.
Question: 3)
Similarly, for the given frequency, 249 Hz
the wavelength is 1.33 m
Hence, a length of L = [lambda / 2] = 0.665 m open-open tube is required for the measurements to be carried out for the given frequency.
Question: 5)
The above formulae implies that the length of the air column doesnot depend on the diameter of the given tube, but depends purely on the Length of the tube, hence it wont affect the results even if a tube of twice the diameter is used than the one you used.
