A rectangular board is made of two pieces as shows. The shaded piece and the unshaded piece are made of materials of different uniform mass densities. The board is placed on a frictionless pivot. It rest as shown. Prictionless remains at a Is the mass of the unshaded piece (m) greater than, Unshaded piece Shaded piece equal to the mass of the shaded piece (m)? Explain. b. Mark the approximate location of the center of mass of the board with an "X" Explain how you determined the location. If you do not have enough information, state so explicitly. 2. In the situations below, will the meter stick balance? Explain your reasoning.Explanation / Answer
1
a)
The board is at rest or in equilibrium. that means the torque by the shaded portion balance the torque by unshaded portion.
we know that Torque = weight force x distance from the pivot
the distance from the pivot for the shaded portion is smaller, hence weight force on it must be greater so as to have equal Torque . so the mass of shaded portion is greater.
the mass Unshaded portion is less than mass of shaded portion
b)
The center of mass lies at the pivot since the Torque is balanced at that point.
