8 01 points I Provious Anowers CJ10 16 P.047 My Notos Ask Your Toa When an earthquake occurs, two types of sound waves are generated and travel through the earth. The primary, or P, wave has a speed of about 10.0 km/s and the secondary, or S, wave has a speed of about 5.0 km/s. A seismograph, located some distance away, records the arrival of the P wave and then, 100 s later, records the arrival of the S wave. Assuming that the waves travel in a straight line, how far is the seismograph from the earthquake? Enter a number Section 16.6 Submit Answer Save Progress Practice Another Version

Explanation / Answer

Given :-

Speed of the primary wave is,

Vp = 10 km = 10000 m/s

Speed of the secondary wave is,

Vs = 5 km/s = 5000 m/s

Let the time taken for the p wave to reach the seisomograph be t

and for the s wave be t + 100 s

Since, both the waves reach the same distance, we can write

dp = ds

Vp*t = Vs(t + 100)

10000*t = 5000*(t + 100)

10000*t = 5000*t + 500000

5000*t =  500000

t = 100 sec

Distance between the seisomograph and the eqrth quake is,

D = Vp*t

D = 10000 m/s x 100 s

D =1000000 m or 1000 km
