Number 4
4. In the crossed B and B fields shown below, a charged particle is moving in a straight line perpendicular to the page at a constant speed. No other forces act on the particle. a) What is the particle's speed? b) Is the particle moving into or out of the page? charged particle with mass 3.75 x 10-9 kg traveling at a constant speed of 2700 m/s in a moving clockwise when viewed from above, in a region with a uniform circle of radius 3.5 m, magnetic field of B - 4.8T out of the page. a) What is the particle's charge? 2700 m/s 4.8T 1 3.5 m b) How long does it take for this particle to make one full revolution around the circle? (i.e. What is its period?) c) If at the moment shown the particle's velocity was 2700 m/s?200 m/s k, how far would it travel in the k direction in one period (i.e., what is its pitch?) (Hint: you shouldn't have to do a lot of extra calculations for this.)Explanation / Answer
4)
a) for no deflection, Fe = FB
q*E = q*v*B
v = E/B
= 75/0.32
= 234 m/s
b) If the particle has positive charge it is moving into the page.
If the particle has negative charge it is moving out of the page.
5)
a) we know, r = m*v/(B*q)
q = m*v/(B*r)
= 3.75*10^-9*2700/(4.8*3.5)
= 6.03*10^-7 C
b) T = 2*pi*r/v
= 2*pi*3.5/2700
= 0.00814 s
c) distance travelled along z direction,
z = 200*T
= 200*0.00814
= 1.628 m
