5. + -3 points OSColPhys2016 14.3.P.012 My Notes An ice bag containing 0C ice is much more effective in absorbing heat than one containing the same amount of 0°C water (a) How much heat (in J) is required to raise the temperature of 0.700 kg of water from 0°C to 26.0%C? (b) How much heat (in ) is required to first melt 0.700 kg of 0°C ice and then raise its temperature? (c) Explain how your answers support the contention that the ice is more effective. This answer has not been graded yet Additional Materials ReadingExplanation / Answer
Part A.
Heat required is given by:
Q = m*Cw*dT
Cw = 4186 J/kg-C
Q = 0.700*4186*(26 - 0)
Q = 76185.2 J
Part B
In this case first energy will be required to melt the ice and then to raise the temperature, So
Q = Q1 + Q2
Q1 = m*Lf = energy required to change ice in water
Lf = 3.34*10^5 J/kg
Q = 0.7*3.34*10^5 + 0.7*4186*26
Q = 309985.2 J
Part C
fromPart A and B we can see that energy reuqired to melt ice is higher than energy required to raise the temperature of water. Which means ice can absorb more energy without raising temperature.
