Name and Weekday Spring 2018 Physics 209A Sonoma State University Prelab 8: Impulse and Momentum An impulse on an object results in a change in momentum. 1-F * ? t Show your work for Q2 and Q4. ?mv units: N"s 1. State Newton's 3rd Law and describe an actual situation in which it applies. 2. Momentum is defined as p mv (mass x velocity). Both p and v are vectors. Given m-2 kg, and vi: 4 m/s, after an impulse vfs(-4m/s), what would be the change in momentum? 3. What is an impulse in terms of the physics definition? The momentum change of the object in Question 2 occurred because there was a force on the mass in the negative direction that lasted for 2 seconds. What was the quantity of force? 4.

Explanation / Answer

1) newton's third law:

for every action, there is equal and opposite reaction.

it will applies at launching of rockets.

2)change in momentum = mvi - mvf

= m(vi - vf)

= 2 kg((4 m/s ) - (-4 m/s))

= 16 kg m/s

3) impulse is defined as  the product of force acting on a body and the time interval during which the force is exerted on the body

impulse = force x time intervel

4) change of momentum = impulse

= force x time intervel

therefore force x time intervel = 16 kg m/s

force = (16 kg m/s)/time intervel

= (16 kg m/s)/(2 s)

= 8 N
