Question

how much force must be produced by the biceps brachii, attached at 90 degrees to the radius at 4 cm from the centre of rotation of the elbow joint, to support a weight of 95 newtons held in the hand at a distance of 32 cm from the elbow joint? assume that the forearm and hand have combined weight of 35 newtons and that their centre of gravity is located 17 cm from the elbow joint?

SO IM ASSUMING ITS F * FA = R* RA which i guess ( NOT SURE) its: F * 4 cm = 95N* 32 cm ,
but what does the last part of the question tells us ? what are we suppose to do ?

Explanation / Answer

the second part tells u have to consider a additional torque due to the weight of the forearm+hand

so the equation will be

F * 4 cm =35N*17cm + 95N* 32 cm

F = 908.5 N
