1) Photoautotroph: Energy source - Light - photoautotrophs capture the photons from light to produce energy. The energy produced is used to drive the organisms metabolism. Carbon source - Carbon dioxide - the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is converted to organic materials utilizing the energy obtained from light.

2) Chemoautotroph: Energy source - inorganic chemicals - chemoautotrophs obtain energy by oxidizing the electron donor chemicals found around them. Carbon source - Carbon dioxide - Like photoautotrphs, chemoautotrophs too derive their carrbons from carbon dioxide.

3) Photoheterotrophs: Energy source - Light - Like photoautotrophs, chemoheterotrophs too derive energy from light. Carbon source - organic carbon source. Unlike autotrophs, heterotrophs cannot fix carbon dioxide from atmosphere, hence they use organic carbon sources such as carbohydrates, lipids and proteins to obtain carbon.

4) Chemoheterotrophs - Energy source - Inorganic chemicals - Like chemoautotrophs, chemoheterotrophs too derive energy from inorganic chemicals such as sulfur or ammonia.
