Question

Why does one need to apply the force to make the bob go in circles? What is the direction of the force

This is a question from a lab experiment with centripetal force below is my procedure which can help you visualize my question
Centripetal Force
1. Determine mass of bob and record it in data sheets.
2. Move the radial indicator to its position nearest the shaft. At the top of the shaft adjust the crossarm without the spring attached so that it hangs over the radial indicator.
3. Record the radius as the distance from the shaft to the indicator in data sheets.
4. Attach the spring between the bob and the shaft and to the other side of the bob attach a mass hanger with a string and hook.
5. Record the mass of the hangar and any additional mass needed to line the bob up directly above the indicator. The total weight is equal to the centripetal force applied by the string during rotation.
6. Add mass in 1 gram increments to determine the mass needed to cause a barely noticeable movement. Record this mass as the uncertainty in data sheets.
7. Remove the attached mass and rotate the shaft so that the bob aligns with the indicator. Record the time for 100 revolutions.
8. Add 100 g to the bob and record the time for 100 revolutions when the bob is again lined up with the indicator during rotation.
9. Repeat the process for the indicator halfway to its farthest position and again at its farthest position.

Explanation / Answer

For the bob to go in circle, the centripetal force acting on the bob need to be compensated by the weight of the bob. To atain this we require force to balance the weight. This force should be radially outwards.
