Question
A 4.0 kg object is moving at 5.0m/s NORTH. It strikes a 6.0 kg object moving WEST at 2.0 m/s. The objects have completely stuck together. What is the velocity of the 4.0 kg object and at what angle is it moving?m1= 4.0 kg v1= 5.0 m/s
m2= 6.0 kg v2= 2.0 m/s
I found the V after collision= 2.33 m/s
I'm having trouble finding the angle the object os moving north of west.
I thought to use tan^-1 [(m1v1sin(theta) + m2v2)/ m1v1sin(theta)] =58 degrees.
... Is this anything close to doing it right??
Thanks!!
Explanation / Answer
I get 59 degrees north of west.
But I'm not sure I understnad your technique...what theta are you taking the sine of?
The momentum components stay the same; 20 kg-m/s north and 12 kg-m/s west; all applied to one 10 kg object, so your velocity is right, and the direction is just arctangent (20/12), directed to the northwest.
