Question
A pole stands in a river, half in and half out of the water. Another pole of the same length stands vertically on the shore at a place where the ground is level. The shadow cast by the pole in the river on the river bottom is:shorter than the shadow of the pole on land if the Sun is high and longer if the sun is low
slightly longer than the shadow of the pole on land
shorter than the shadow of the pole on land
the same length as the shadow of the pole on land
much longer than the shadow of the pole on land
Explanation / Answer
Hi So the answer tot his question is "shorter than the shadow of the pole on land". The reason is that light moves more slowly in water than in air so that means the light rays bend towards the river floor, making them hit the floor at a steeper angle and so the shadow will be relatively shorter than if there was no water present. Hope that helps Jonathan
