beneficial role for inflammation has been demonstrated in a
model of muscle injury involving the transition from muscle
unloading (i.e., non-weight bearing) to reloading in
mice.21 Specific antibodies to a mouse macrophage surface
antigen, anti-F4/80, inhibited macrophage activity by 86%
over a 4-day reloading period. This was associated with
impaired muscle regeneration compared with controls, as
indicated by reduced central nucleation. Thus, macrophage
activity, traditionally associated with tissue damage in an
inflammatory environment,19 can also contribute to muscle
growth and repair following injury.
