Lipids are of three types :

Compound lipids : They yield fatty acids, alcohal and other compounds like phosphoric acid, sugar etc on hydrolysis. Example : phospholipids are the most common example.

Derived lipid : these lipids do not contain any ester linkage. These are those hydrolysis products of simple or compound lipids which still retain the properties of lipids. Examples: sterols , vitamin D , E And K.
