Question
1) The thermostat in a room reads 68 oF. What is this room temperature in the unit of oC.?
2) Calculate the speed of sound wave traveling in the room that the thermostat reads in question 1. (unit of m/s)
3) The figure below shows two standing waves for resonance of sound with fixed frequency. The first two consecutive lengths of air column in the tube are 25 cm. and 75 cm., respectively. If this experiment is performed in the room which mentioned previously in question 1) and 2), what would be the frequency corresponding to the sound resonances (unit of Hertz). Note: Lcorr is negligible.

Explanation / Answer
Part 1:
Tc = (Tf - 32) / 1.8
= (68 - 32) / 1.8
= (68 - 32) / 1.8
= 20oC
Part 2:
The speed of sound varies with temperature according to the following rule:
v = 331 + 0.6T m/s
= 331 + 0.6x20 m/s
= 343 m/s
Part 3:
For the 25 cm column, = 4L = 1m
For the 75 cm column, = 4L/3 = 1m
Frequency = v/ = 343/1 = 343 Hertz
