A) The microbiology lab has received a culture of an antibiotic resistant bacterial strain from a hospital. The underlying mechanism of this strain's antibiotic resistance could be due to transfer of genes by the process of conjugation.

B) Conjugation is the method of horizontal gene transfer from one bacteria to another by a direct cell to cell contact. This can be demonstrated by the following experiment. When bacterial strains that are sensitive to antibiotic when cultured in the presence of bacterial strains that are resistant to antibiotic, will become antibiotic resistant.
