Activity 2: Determine how the electric force depends on the distance between the charged objects. Top of Form
Prepare two small Styrofoam puffs like in the figure below.
Charge the puffs by rubbing them with wool.
Move one puff progressively closer to the other, and notice if and how they repel or attract each other.
Do they repel or attract each other? ________________________________
Moving the two sources of charge closer, how does the angle of inclination of the tread change? __________________________________________________
What can you infer from this observation? __________________________________________
Explanation / Answer
Question: Do they repel or attract each other?
Answer: they repel each other.
Question: how does angle of incination change?
Answer: the angle of inclination increases
Question:What can you infer from this observation?
Answer: two Conclusions:
1- like charges repel each other. the two Styrofoam puffs acquired the same type of charge(could be positive or negative) because each styrofaom puff was rubbed against the same material(wool). so positive charges repel each other.same for negative charges.
2- as the distance becomes less the electrical force of repulsion becomes stronger.thats why the thread inclined more .If the distance between the charged objects increases, the force of repulsion(or attraction) decreases, and vice versa.
