Question
Suppose that the vehicle can drive a distance of d0 on a gallon of gas when traveling at a speed v0. Would the vehicle be able to travel a distance greater than, less than, or equal to d0 on a gallon of gas when traveling at a speed of 2v0?
Using the formula for Drag I determined that the distance would be less, but this next part I am having trouble with:
How far will the vehicle be able to travel on a gallon of gas when traveling at speed 2v0? Express your answer in terms of d0.
Every formula I try winds up just showing that the distance would be the same.
Explanation / Answer
Using the formula for Drag, when velocity increases.. the opposing force increases.
In this case , as velocity becomes twice, the force becomes 4 times. and so the deceleration will also be 4 times.
But this will never say that the distance travelled be less.
The distance will remain same.
the distance travelled = d0
even with velocity 2Vo the distance will be same
