Question
After purchasing a plastic container of mustard seeds in the Atlanta market this summer, I poured about half into another container to share with a friend - former UVI Marine Biology professor Jim Battey, now living in the Atlanta area. When I put the lid back on the original container, several seeds jumped onto the sides and top. They responded to my finger. What do you think was happening? Be as specific as possible about what might be charged or not, what sign, and how that would explain what you see. I will be considering the logic of your arguments, as I'm not sure I have it figured out yet.
Explanation / Answer
when you poured seeds in other container, at that time seeds come in contact with each other and due to friction between them static charges formed on them. now these charges can be positive or negative both. when you close the lid opposite chareged seeds are repelled by the other seeds and they strike on the waals of container and top. so main reason behind this process is charging of seeds due to friction.
