Question

The circuit below consists of 3 resistors and two batteries, each with an internal resistance of 0.5 Ohm. a) What is the potential difference V_ad between points a and d in the circuit below? b) What is the terminal voltage of the 4.00-V battery? c) A battery with emf 10.30 V and internal resistance 0.50 Ohm is inserted in the circuit at d, with its negative terminal connected to the negative terminal of the 8.00-V battery. What is the difference of potential V_bc between the terminals of the 4.00-V battery now?

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

a) let the current in the resistance is I

Using KVL

-4 - (9 + 0.50 + 6 + 8 + 0.50) * I + 8 = 0

solving for I

I = 0.167 A

potential difference across Vad = 8 - 8.5 * 0.167

potential difference across Vad = 6.58 V

b)

terminal voltage of 4 V = 4 -0.167 * 0.50

terminal voltage of 4 V = 3.92 V

c)

let the current in the circuit now is I

-10.30 -4 - (9 + 0.50 + 6 + 8 + 0.50 + 0.50) * I + 8 = 0

I = 0.257 A

terminal voltage of 4 V = 4 -0.257 * 0.50

terminal voltage of 4 V = 3.87 V
