Question

The circuit below consists of two identical light bulbs (labeled ?A? and ?B?) and a single battery. When the switch is closed which of the following occurs?

(a)The current flowing through the battery decreases, and the brightness of bulb B decreases.

(b)The current flowing through the battery decreases, and the brightness of bulb B increases.

(c)The current flowing through the battery increases, and the brightness of bulb B decreases.

(d)The current flowing through the battery increases, and the brightness of bulb B remains unchanged. (e)The brightness of bulb B decreases, and the brightness of bulb A remains unchanged.

Explanation / Answer

(c)The current flowing through the battery increases, and the brightness of bulb B decreases. Bulb B gets short circuited. Initially the impedance of Bulb B was in series with that of Bulb A and so the current is less. When switch is closed the only impedance is from bulb A and so the impedance has reduced and current increases. Current flowing through Bulb B reduces as all the current flows through the short circuit path in parallel with it.
