Question
a. A fixed pivot is placed through point mass 1. The whole object is then released from rest and allowed to swing downwards about the pivot at point mass 1. What is the rotational velocity of this object when the object is at its lowest point? Express answer in terms of d given in the figure
b. The fixed pivot is now moved to point mass 2. The whole object is then released from rest and allowed to swing downward about the pivot at point mass 2. What is rotational velocity of this object when the object is at its lowest point? Express answer in terms of d
Explanation / Answer
a) Center of mass lies at the mass at the center. Its distance from the pivot(mass 1)= d
So 9mgd= 9mv2/2
v=2gd
=v/d= 2g/d
b) Center of mass lies at the mass at the center. Its distance from the pivot(mass 1)= d2
So v=(22gd)
=v/d2 = (2g/d)
Hope this helped. Ask any doubt. :)
