Question

a) audible wavelength :- the range of audible frequencies is from 20 hz to 20,000 hz. what is the range of the wavelength of audible sound in air?
b visible light:- the range of visible light extends from 400 nm to 700 nm. what is the range of visible frequencies of light?
c) brain surgery;- surgeons can remove brain tumors by using a cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator, which produces sound waves of frequency 23 khz. what is the wavelength of these waves in air?
d) sound in the body;- what would be the wavelength of the sound in part (c) in bodily fluids in which the speed of sound is 1480 m/s, but the frequency is unchanged?

Explanation / Answer

velocity = freq x wavelength (v = f)

(a) velocity of sound = 330 m/s

So 1 = 330/20 = 16.5 m

2 = 330/20000 = 0.000165 m

So wavelength range = 0.000165 m - 16.5 m

(b) Velocity of light = 3 x 10^8 m/s

So f1 = ( 3 x 10^8 ) / (400 x 10^-9) = 0.75 x 10^15 Hz

f2 = (3 x 10^8) / (700 x 10^-9) = 0.429 x 10^15 Hz

So freq range is 0.429 x 10^15 Hz - 0.75 x 10^15 Hz

(c) velocity of sound = 330 m/s, f = 23000 Hz

So = 330 /23000 = 0.0143 m

(d) v = 1480, f = 23000

So = 1480 / 23000 = 0.064 m
