A hypothesis is the statement created by researchers when they speculate upon the outcome of a research or experiment. A hypothesis must be testable, taking into account current knowledge and techniques, and be realistic. It is a specific, testable prediction about what you expect to happen in a study.

The independent variable is the variable that is not affected by other variables. Instead, it determines the value of other variables. An independent variable is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment to test the effects on the dependent variable.

A dependent variable is the variable being tested and measured in a scientific experiment. The dependent variable is 'dependent' on the independent variable. As the experimenter changes the independent variable, the effect on the dependent variable is observed and recorded.

Positive control is an experimental treatment which is performed with a known factor to get the desired effect of the treatment. The result from the positive control is used to compare the results obtained from the experimental assay.

Negative control is an experimental treatment which does not result in the desired outcome of the experiment.

Constant variables, sometimes called controlled variables are the variables that are kept constant or unchanging throughout the experiment. Once a value is assigned to the constant variable, it cannot be changed till the end of the experiment.
