Question

1.Three blocks of the same size and shape are placed in a tank of water. The masses of
the blocks are unknown. Blocks A and B are suspended from strings attached to spring
scales. Both scales read 5 N. Block C is floating as shown.
(i) Is the magnitude of the buoyant force on
block B (BB) greater than, less than, or
equal to the magnitude of the buoyant
force on block A (BA)?
(ii) Is the mass of block B (MB) greater
than, less than, or equal to the mass of
block A (MA)?
(iii) Is the magnitude of the buoyant force
on block C (CB) greater than, less than, or
equal to the magnitude of the buoyant
force on block A (BA)

on the picture block A is immersed in the water in medium depth, block B is immersed deepest, little bit above the bottom (doesn't touches the bottom), and block C ios floating, and its larger part is immersed)

2.
A small wooden boat floats in a swimming pool, and the level of the water at the edge of
the pool is marked. Consider the following situations and explain whether the level of
the water will rise, fall, or stay the same. (a) The boat is removed from the water. (b)
The boat in the water holds an iron anchor which is removed from the boat and placed
on the shore. (c) The iron anchor is removed from the boat and dropped in the pool

3.
Water and then oil (which don’t mix) are poured into a Ushaped tube, open at both ends. They come to equilibrium
as shown in figure. What is the density of the oil? [Hint:
Pressures at points a and b are equal. Why?

on the picture oil is placed in left pipe/ arm of ''U'' shaped tube and is height is 27.2 cm ,under the oil water is placed and goes to the second arm of ''U''.Different between heights of oil start point in left ''arm'' and water end point in right ''arm'' is 9.41 cm.

Explanation / Answer

one question at a time please. The reading on the scales R = 5N Buyoance force is the force exert by liquid on the surface of the body so when the body sinks more depth its weigth is more. from the figure Block B is more weigth then Block A. But both reads the equal reading is equal to the buyoance force which is given by F = V?g The volume of the bodies since both the blocks are of same size and shape, they read equal reading. (1) The mass of block B sinks more than A so it s mass is morethan A (2) The downward force exerted by block A on the water is equal to the downward force exerted by block B on the water below beacuse both readings are same (3) The buoyant force on C is mmore than A beacuse C is floating whereas the block A is under the water
