One end of a massless coil spring is suspended from a rigid ceiling. It is found that when a 3.7 kg mass is suspended from it the spring stretches 110 mm when the mass comes to rest.

(a) What is the spring constant for the spring?

Which I found is 329.6.

(b) If the mass is then pulled down an additional 225 mm (by hand) and released from rest at that point, what will be the speed of the mass when it passes through the spring-mass rest position (this is where the spring was stretched 100.mm by the stationary mass).

This I cannot figure out.

b) From the law of conservation of energy,    (1/2)kx^2 = (1/2)mv^2 Here k = 329.6 N/m          x = 225 mm             = 225 x 10-3 m          m = 3.7 kg               (1/2)( 329.6 N/m)( 225 x 10-3 m)2 =(1/2)(3.70 kg)v2                                                            v = 2.12 m/s                                                            v = 2.12 m/s
