Question

You have been called to testify as an expert witness in a trial involving an automobile accident. The speed limit on the highway where the accident occurred was 64.5 km/hr. The drive of the car slammed on his breaks, locking his wheels, and left skids marks as the car slid to a halt. You measure the length of the skid marks to be 67.0m. And you determine the coefficient of friction between the tires and pavement at the time of the accident was 0.4 How fast was the car traveling just prior to the driver hitting the brakes? Was he speeding?

Explanation / Answer

acceleration, a= g =-0.4*9.8 = -3.92 m/s2

using the equation, v^2=u^2 + 2as

where ,v=0 a=-3.2   s=67m/s

so, u=sqrt(2as) = 22.92 m/s =82.5 km/hr

so, yes he was speeding
