Question
A venturi meter is a device for measuring the speed of a fluid within a pipe. The drawing shows a gas flowing at a speed v2 through a horizontal section of pipe whose cross-sectional area A2 = 0.0600 m^2. The gas has a density of ? = 1.50 kg/m^3. The Venturi meter has a cross-sectional area of A1 = 0.0400 m^2 and has been substituted for a section of the larger pipe. The pressure difference between the two sections is P2 - P1 = 180 Pa.(a) Find the speed v2 of the gas in the larger original pipe.
(b) Find the volume flow rate Q of the gas.
Explanation / Answer
a ) : for venturi meter
let p2 and A2 are properties at entry point
and p1 and A1 are properties at narrow point
P2- P1 = /2 (v1^2 - v2^2)
180 = 0.75 (v1^2 - v2^2) ----------->eqtn1
from continuity eqtn
A1v1 = A2v2
0.04 v1 = 0.06 v2
v1 = 1.5 * v2 --------eqtn2
put this value in eqtn 1
180 = 0.75 (2.25 v2^2 - v2^2)
240 = 2.25 v2^2 - v2^2
240 = 2.25 v2^2
v2 = 10.327 m/sec
b )
Q = v1A1 = v2A2
and from eqtn 1
we get, Q = 0.83138 m3/sec
