Question
A jet pilot puts an aircraft with a constant speed into a vertical circular loop. (a) Which is greater, the normal force exerted on the seat by the pilot at the bottom of the loop or that at the top of the loop? Why? (b) If the speed of the aircraft is 700 km/h and the radius is 2.0 km, calculate the normal forces exerted on the seat by the pilot at the bottom and top of the loop. Express your answer in terms of the pilot's weight.Explanation / Answer
a) the normal force is greater at the bottom because the normal force works against gravity at the bottom but with gravity at the top b)at bot->N-mg=mv^2/r so N=m*(700/3.6)^2/(2000)+9.8*m or N=28.7 mass of pilot (sign depends on axis choice) at top-> N=mv^2/r-mg so N=28.7-19.6=9.1 mass of pilot
