Question

The question asks to find the electric field at A and at B, and what the net direction is for each. I understand how to find the electric fields at A and B, but what I don't understand is why the net direction for both A and B is to the right.

I placed E1 at -12.5 nC, and E2 at -6.25 nC. I thought that, because I came up with a bigger number for E1, and because charges go toward the negative in an electric field, its net direction would be to the left, but it is to the right. I am completely confused on direction.

Explanation / Answer

You found the charge of the electric field at A and B. The larger number you got at E1 means that it is more negative at E1 and more positive at E2. Therefore the net direction of the field is to the right.
