Question

A point charge of -7 mu or micro CC is located at x = 2 m, y = -2 m. A second point charge of 12 mu or micro CC is located at x = 1 m, y = 4 m.

(a) Find the magnitude and direction of the electric field at x = -1 m, y = 0.
7690.058 N/C
282.140 degrees (counterclockwise from plus x axis)

(b) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the force on an electron at x = -1 m, y = 0 .
1.232e-15 N
?______degrees (counterclockwise from plus x axis)

I've got the first three blanks right, and I thought the last one should be 77.860 but it was wrong. Why is it wrong? What is the correct answer?
Thanks a lot!

Explanation / Answer

I'm taking you at your words that you're right. Because the electron has a negative charge, the angle will be rotated by 180 degrees. You could add or subtract 180, but since you want the angle to be between: 0 and 360, or -180 and 180, you should just subtract 180. 282.140 - 180 = 102.14 degrees.
