Question
Hello guys,
I need some help with my engineering homework..
Knowing that a = 1.25 in., determine the largest value of P that can be applied without exceeding either of the following allowable stresses: tensile = 10 ksi , compression = 18 ksi.
Picture of problem: http://i39.tinypic.com/w1r5hy.png
So I approached it by:
= -(P/A)-((Mx*Z)/Ix)+((Mz*X)/Iz)
Mx = Px
Mz = Pz
solving for P I got
P = -( /((1/A)+((Z^2)/Ix)-((X^2)/Iz)
and setting it equal to the allowable stresses.
My textbook says the answer should be 53.9 kips .
Can someone tell me how to do it step by step on how to do this problem?
Thanks in advance.
