Question

45, Imagine the following scenario: There is a growing eggplant seedling, happily expanding its leaf area until, after a few days, the soil starts to dry out and leaf cell expansion stops. (The cells do not shrink, but there is no further expansion.) Simultaneously, the leaf cells continue to photosynthesize at rates that are only slightly reduced compared to the photosynthesis rates before the leaves stopped expanding. The result is that there is more sugar produced than is needed by the leaf, so more is loaded into the phloem. How could this result naturally in the plant having a better chance of relieving the water stress that is starting to develop?

Explanation / Answer

Drought conditions limits plant growth and under stress conditions sugar metabolism acts as a dynamic process. sugars produced as end products of photosynthetic mechanism are required for the normal metabolism and growth in plants .under less water conditions the concentration of sugars increase to provide osmoregulation. soluble sugars act as signalling molecules to regulate the sensitivity of plants. soluble sugars act as primary messangers and help in the control of gene expression that limits plant growth and metabolism. Accumulation of soluble sugars in the tissues down regulates photosynthesis and thus maintains homeostasis.
