Question
A bullet of mass 2.9g is fired horizontally into a 1.7kg wooden block at rest on a horizontal surface. The coefficient of kinetic friction between block and surface is 0.22. The bullet stops in the block which slides straight ahead for 1.6m (without rotation) (a). What is the speed of the block immediately after the bullet stoops inside it ? (find the acceleration of the block using motion on a horizontal plan with friction and from it the initial velocity). (b) at what speed is the bullet fired?. (c) if the coefficient of kinetic friction was 0.15 how far would the block slide ? How long would the slide take ?Explanation / Answer
a) v2-u2 = 2as
v = 0
a = -g
u = 2gs
u = (1.414*0.22*9.8*1.6) = 2.208 m/s
b) 0.5mv2 = mgs
0.5*2.9*v2 = 0.22*2.9*9.8*1.6
v = 2.626 m/s
c) 0.5mv2 = mgs
= 0.15
solve for s take v=2.626
