Question

A person 1.6 m tall stands 2.9 m from a reflecting globe in a garden. (a) If the diameter of the globe is 33 cm, where is the image of the person, relative to the surface of the globe? (Enter a negative value if the image forms behind the globe.) I tried -8.26 and -8.33 as the answers but the homework keeps telling me it's wrong (b) How large is the person's image? cm

Explanation / Answer

The focal length is 15/4 = 3.75cm (Since it is a globe the f = -3.75cm) Now using 1/f = 1/do + 1/di => 1/di = 1/f - 1/do = 1/(-3.75) - 1/560 =-0.2685 So di = -3.73cm b) m = -di/do = -(-3.73)/560 = 0.00666 SO 0.00666 = y/160 => y = 160*0.00666 = 1.07cm
