Question
A cell contains an unknown gas. Probing of the infrared region has revealed absorption features centered at 712 (VS), 1415 (VW), 2097 (W), and 3311 (S) cm-1, as shown in the sketch below. The first feature can be resolved into three distinct, but unresolved branches, while the others contain only two branches, also unresolved. In addition, Raman scattering from a HeNe laser (632.8 nm) has been measured at 662.7 and 729.8 nm (see sketch) Determine the origin of each of these features and the geometry of the molecule contained in the cellExplanation / Answer
strong 712 indicates C-H aromatic / ring-structred
weak 1415 indicates O-H carboxylic acid
strong 3311 indicates N-H streching amine
weak 2097 indicates C triple bond C
Based on these, the molecule could be colchicine
