Question

4 Use the graphs to answer the following questions based on the 7 days of data shown.. a. Answer questions in sentence form i. What was the amount of electrical energy (GWh) generated in Queensland? (1 mark) What was the amount of electrical energy (GWh) generated from black coal for Queensland? ii. (1 mark) What was the cheapest source for the generation (of at least 1 GWh) of electricity in: iii. South Australia . Queensland (1 mark) Greenhouse gas emissions from a coal power generator's lifetime is estimated at approximately 1 kg CO2 equivalent/kWh (Canadian Nuclear Association 2016). Calculate the approximate greenhouse gas emissions (kg CO2 equivalent emissions) from the use of coal for the given week in Queensland. Show calculation and then answer in a sentence. iv. (2 marks) Use the data provided in the graphs to complete the following table and hence draw a paired bar graph showing the comparison of sources used to generate electricity in Queensland and South Australia. Graph can be computer generated or hand drawn on b. graph paper and should be at least half an A4 page in size. Percentage of electricity generation from different sources for Queensland and South Australia from 11:30pm 20 May to 11:30 27 May 2018 Queensland South Australia (%) 4.0 Sources 3.9 Solar (Rooftop Solar (Utility) Wind Gas total (reciprocating+OCGT+CCGT+Steam) Hydro Battery (Discharging) Distillate Biomass Black Coal Imports Figures rounded so may not add to 100%. (3 marks) Make a statement about the change in Queensland's greenhouse emissions if the electricity generation from coal could be replaced with generation of electricity using renewable sources combined with energy storage such as pumped hydro or batteries. c. Explanation / Answer

a. 1. The main sources of electrical energy in queensland are solar form, hydro form and black coal. Hence the net electrical energy generated = 47.0+16.7+1027.1 = 1090.8 GWh

2. The black coal in queensland generates agood amount of energy which is equivallent to 1027.1 GWh.

3. The Cheapest source of energy in South Australia is Wind energy, which is costing about $93.73, while in Queensland, the cheapest source is solar roof energy costing to $71.69

4. The data given says that 1 kg of Co2 is released per kWh of coal energy. In Queensland the total coal energy generated = 1027.1 GWh which is equal to 1027.1*10^6 kWh.

So, amount of Carbon dioxide generated = 1027.1*10^6 kg = 1.027*10^9 kg

Hence the Queensland's rate of generation is 1*10^9 kg equivalent/1 GWh.
