Question
A block is at rest on a plank whose angle can be varied. The anale is gradually increased from 0 dea. At 30.9°, the block starts to slide down the incline, traveling 3.50 m down the incline in 2.10 s. Calculate the coefficient of static friction between the block and the plank. Motion of a block IS OC 0.399 If static friction acts on the block, does it move? What is its acceleration in this case? . Tries 1/12 Calculate the kinetic coefficent of friction between the block and the plank. Tries 0/12Explanation / Answer
A)
Given,
Theta = 30.9
Coefficient of static friction, u = tan(30.9) = 0.598
B)
S = ut + 0.5at^2
3.5 = 0 + 0.5 x a x 2.1^2
Acceleration, a = 1.587 m/s^2
a = g sin(theta) - u cos(theta)
u g cos(theta) = 5.03 - 1.587 = 3.445
Coefficient of kinetic friction, u = 3.445/(9.8 cos30.9) = 0.41
