Question

Kinematics PRE-LAB ASSIGNMENT The purpose of these exercises is to strengthen your ability to translate qualitatively between the x(t), v(t) and a(t) descriptions of motions, without using any equations. All these motions are in one dimension, with positive position numbers being to the right and negative position numbers to the left. Do these exercises before coming to lab, as they will form the basis for your lab work. Hand in your solutions as part of your lab report. For each of the following graphs of position (x) versus time (t), applying your knowledge of velocity v(t) and acceleration a(t), describe the motion in one or more sentences, using only non-mathematical words: for example, "The object moved to the right at decreasing speed, then turned around and moved to the left at increasing speed." Use the space next to each of the graphs to write your answers 1. The objeut 15 at rest The obieer moved to the 31

Explanation / Answer

a) Slope of the line is zero. So velocity of object is zero.

The object is at rest.

b) The slope is positive, velocity of object is constant and is positive.

Obect starts at left side, crosses origin and moves to rightward with constant speed.

c) The slope is negative, velocity of object is constant and is negative.

Object starts at right side, crosses origin and moves to leftward with constant speed.

d) The slope is positive, so velocity is positive and is increasing . The object is accelerating.

Object starts from rest and gains speed (accelerates ) moves to the right.

e) The slope is negative, so velocity is negative and is increasing. The object is accelerating.

The object starts at right and from rest it gains speed (accelerates) crosses the origin moves to leftward.

f) Velocity is initially positive but due to negative acceleration it decreases becomes zero, and turns negative after some time.

The objects starts at origin with righward and decreasing speed and returns to the same point at the end of the journey with a negative speed.

g) The object starts on the rightside with zero speed, the speed becomes negative, Hence after some time the object reaches the origin with increasing negative speed. After crossing the origin, speed of the object started decreasing. The object reaches a point on left with zero speed and turns to right. Now it will move with increasing speed and reach the origin, after crossing the origin the speed again starts decreasing and object will reach the starting point with zero speed.

h) The object starts from origin moves to right with constant positive velocity, comes to rest and then after some time the obect moves to origin with constant negative velocity.
