Question

15. 11pt] Select the motiom diagram that corresponds to each of the four situations.E.., if diag. A corresponds to the first situation, diag. C to the second, and none of the diagrams to situations 3 and 4, enter ACNN. Note that the velocity and acceleration vectors are shown; both must be correct (1) Galileo drops a ball from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Consider its motion from when it leaves his hand until a moment before it hits the ground. Gi) Trish is driving her car at a steady speed, them hits her brakes and skids to a stop Gii) A ball is thrown horizontally off a high cliff. (iv) A rock is thrown up onto a high cliff.

Explanation / Answer

Ans

i) The motion of ball is vertical. The speed of the ball increases as it fall. The ball has constant acceleration. In graph D acceleration a is increasing (not constant) None of the diagram satisfies the conditions.

ii) The acceleration of the car is opposite to its motion (and it's constant) as its speed decreases to zero. The car is moving at constant velocity before applying brakes. Motion diagram A satisfies the conditions..

iii) The ball is thrown horizontally, just after the throw the velocity of the ball must be pointing below horizontal. The ball has constant acceleration. Motion diagram C satisfies the conditions.

iv) The rock is thrown vertically up as the rock moves up its velocity vectors are in up direction and decreasing in length due to gravity acting downward. The rock has constant acceleration in down direction. None of the diagram satisfies the conditions.
