Question

Activity #4 More 1D Kinematics 1. You throw a ball straight up with a velocity of 14.0 m/s How much time does it take for its velocity to decrease to 10.0 m/s? a. b. How much time does it take to reach the top of its motion? c. How far above its starting point does the ball travel? How much total time does it take for the ball go up and then retum to its starting height? d. 2. You drop a ball from top of a 100.0 m tall building. a. What is the ball's initial velocity? b. How much time does it take to hit the ground? c. What is its velocity just before it hits the ground?

Explanation / Answer

1) a) using the equation

v = u - gt

10 = 14 - 9.8*t

t = 0.41 s

b) v = u - gt

0 = 14 - 9.8*t

t = 1.43 s

c) v^2 - u^2 = 2gS

0 - 14^2 = 2*-9.8*S

S = 10 m

d) total time taken = 2t = 2*1.43 = 2.86 s
