Question
2. The diagrams below show readings of a vernier caliper, Figure (1.a) shows the zero error reading. Figure (1.b) the reading when the vernier caliper is being used to measure the diameter of a ball. What is the actual diameter of the ball? (include the units in parenthesis) Figure l.a Figure 1.b Answer: Zero Reading Reading of main scale Reading of vernier scale Total reading of the vernier caliper Actual diameter of the ball 3. Figure 2 shows a micrometer reading of the length of a cylinder. Assuming no zero error, what is the length of the cylinder? Solution
Q2
Zero reading = 0xL.C.=0 (cm)
Reading of main scale=5.9 (cm)
Reading of vernier scale = 4
Total reading of vernier caliper = Reading of main scale +(Reading of vernier scale x least count)
Least count of vernier caliper
= smallest division on main scale/Total number divisions on vernier scale
=0.1 cm/10 = 0.01 cm
Total reading = 5.9+(4x0.01)=5.94 (cm)
Actual diameter of ball=Total reading +- zero reading
Actual diameter of ball= 5.94 (cm)
4. The jaws of the micrometer should not be forced, because it will give incorrect reading on main scale and/or on circular scale. For that we have to use Ratchet stop and get right feel when we are measuring something with micrometer screw guage.
(Note-other figures are not visible, hence can't answer questions 3 and 5)
