Problem 21 A 0.170-kg ball is moving at 3.20 m/s toward the right. It collides elastically with a 0.155-kg ball moving at 2.50 m/s toward the left. 1) Calculate the final velocity of 0.170-kg ball. Let the velocities after collision be v1 and v2
By the conservation of momentum we have
m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2
0.17*3.2 + 0.155*(-2.5) = 0.17v1 + 0.155v2
0.17v1 + 0.155v2 = 0.1565 -------------(1)
for a elastic collision
Velocity of approach = velocity of recces
v2-v1 = u1 - u2
v2 - v1 = 3.2 - (-2.5)
v2 - v1 = 5.7 ------(2)
mutiply the (1) by 0.17 and adding we have
0.325 v2 = 1.1255
v2 = 3.46 m/s
v1 = v2 - 5.7 = 3.46 - 5.7 = -2.24 m/s
1) 2.24 m/s to the left
2) 3.46 m/s to the right
