Question

Cumulative Problem 17 The electric field is zero everywhere except in the region oK2.00 cm, where there is a uniform electric field of 100 N/C in the y direction. A proton is moving in the +x direction with a speed of v 1.00x106 m/s. When the proton passes through the region 0x2.00 cm, the electric field exerts a force on it. 1) When the x coordinate of the proton's position is 2.00 cm, what is the x component of its velocity? Explanation / Answer

1) in x direction, there is no acc so velocity will remain constant in this direction.

v = 1.00 x 10^6 m/s

2) t = x / v0 = 0.02 m / (1 x 10^6 m/s) = 2 x 10^-8 sec

ay = Fe / m = q E / m

ay = (100 x 1.6 x10^-19)/(1.67 x 10^-27)

ay = 9.58 x 10^9 m/s^2

vy = v0y + a t

vy = 0 + (9.58 x 10^9 x 2 x 10^-8)

vy = 192 m/s

3) y = v0y t + ay t^2 / 2

y = 0 + (9.58 x 10^9)(2 x 10^-8)^2 / 2

y = 1.92 x 10^-6 m or 1.92 um

4) after x = 2 cm, there is no field.

hence vy = 192 m/s

5) t = (0.10 - 0.02)/(1 x 10^6)

t = 8 x 10^-8 sec

y = (1.92 x 10^-6) + (192 x 8x 10^-8)

y = 17.3 x 10^-6 m Or 17.3 um
